Why do so many mental health problems start in adolescence, especially for girls and young women?
Gender differences in the development of the brain, mind and mental health in adolescence
by Prof Sarah-Jayne Blakemore
Chair: Prof Nita Forouhi, Director of Organisational Affairs, Clinical School
Adolescence is a period of life hallmarked by change: changes to hormones and the body, changes in the social environment and changes to the brain and the mind. Many mental illnesses first appear during adolescence and there are gender differences in terms of prevalence and onset of mental health problems. What is it about adolescence that increases vulnerability to mental health problems? and what underlies the gender differences?
Sarah-Jayne Blakemore FBA FMedSci FRS is a Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Cambridgge, where she leads the Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Group. Her research explores the developmental of social cognition and decision-making in adolescence and adolescent mental health.
