Recent visit to student-led conference hailed a ‘great success’

Colleagues from NIHR Cambridge BRC recently took part in a student-led science conference, hailed by those that attended as a ‘great success’.

Over 30 students, aged between 13 – 19 years from a selection of local schools and sixth form colleges attended the conference at Abbey College. The ‘Supercharging Medicine – through Technology and AI’ event covered topics such as health research, public and patient involvement in research and using solutions to medical problems using AI and technology.

The day-long event was set up for students considering a career in medicine. Activities included hearing from leading experts in the field, group based activities researching solutions for medical challenges and student presentations. Overall, a day of inspiration, learning and innovation!

NIHR Cambridge BRC Involvement

Colleagues from Cambridge BRC provided three different talks during the day.

Georgina Norris, Patient and Public Involvement Co-ordinator, talked about ‘Getting involved in Health Research’ and how a new generation of researchers is needed to drive forward medical progress. Young people were encouraged to join a PPIE panel in order to help shape the future of medicine.

Professor Rajesh Jena (pictured left)  Clinical Professor of Data Science and Machine Learning in Radiotherapy in the Department of Oncology talked about a project called OSAIRIS – Building an AI Powered Medical Imaging Device.

Professor Vikas Khanduja, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and (Elective) Research Lead at Cambridge University Hospitals talked about SMART – Total Hip Replacement Story, Lessons in Innovation.

The conference was an amazing opportunity for every student that joined us to learn about AI and advancing technology associated with medicine. The guest speakers especially gave inspirational talks on variety of groundbreaking topics such as recognizing patterns, digital twins and hip replacement, which was one of the highlights of the day. -J, Cambridge Student
